In late November, Father Sirico, Ali Ghaffari, Sean Maltbie, and Regan LaMothe traveled to Rome on a transformative journey, co-sponsored by the Classic Learning Test and Catholic University of America. This trip brought together key leaders in Catholic education to explore the future of Catholic education renewal and deepen their understanding of opportunities at Catholic University’s Rome campus. Participants also engaged directly with leaders from the Vatican’s Dicastery for Catholic Education and Culture to hear their vision for the future of Catholic education.

The journey began in Assisi, where Father Sirico concelebrated Mass at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the body of Blessed Carlo Acutis is located. Over lunch, Father shared the inspiring initiatives of the St. John Henry Newman Institute (JHNI) and discussed how their work is advancing the Catholic education renewal movement. The following day was spent visiting Catholic University’s Rome campus, where participants learned about its programs. They also met with the Vatican’s Undersecretary for Catholic Education, who offered valuable insights on the importance of the humanities in shaping a robust Catholic education. The team then traveled to Florence and Norcia, where they met with families and educational leaders exploring new opportunities for Catholic schools. This experience provided further inspiration and reaffirmed the vital role of Catholic education in the intellectual and spiritual formation of students.
Why It Matters
This trip reinforced our commitment to strengthening Catholic education and expanding opportunities for students worldwide. By connecting with educational leaders and experiencing the impact of Catholic programs abroad, we’re more determined than ever to continue this important work. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or supporter of Catholic education, this journey serves as a reminder of the powerful role Catholic institutions play in shaping the future of education, culture, and faith.
