The Latin Mass, also known as the Traditional Latin Mass, holds a special place in the hearts of many Catholics worldwide and can play an important part in forming the sacramental imagination of students. Every Catholic should be privileged to encounter the history, solemnity, and beauty of the Latin Mass.
This post summarizes the best resources we've found for providing clear guidance, historical background, and practical insights into the Latin Mass.
1. The Beginner's Guide to the Traditional Latin Mass, Sophia Institute Press
Edited by Dr. Scott Hahn and Fr. Robert Sirico, this important contribution to reviving understanding and appreciation of the Latin Mass among the rising generation was created by The St. John Henry Newman Institute in partnership with Sophia Institute Press. These resources constitute a curriculum that will guide both newcomers and lifelong Latin Mass goers a beautiful framework for praying with the ancient liturgy of the Church.
Sophia Institute also publishes Treasure and Tradition, The Traditional Latin Mass Explained, and The Catholic Mass, all of which are excellent resources for adults.
An easy-to-use, illustrated guide to praying the Latin Mass. These books provide an excellent bridge for parishes and schools embracing the Latin Mass for the first time or hoping to welcome visitors to the liturgy. If it isn't practical to place them in the pew for all students or parishioners, consider keeping a couple dozen by the entry or purchasing a classroom set for systematically introducing students to the Latin Mass. For K-8 schools, we recommend doing so in 5th or 6th grade.
